Challenge
The CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) is a European directive that sets out requirements for companies regarding what and how they must report on their sustainability. Among other things, CO₂ emissions must be reported in this report. A distinction is made between Scope 1 (direct CO₂ emissions), Scope 2 (CO₂ from purchased energy) and Scope 3 (CO₂ in the supply chain). For Scope 3 emissions, companies must contact their suppliers and transporters.
Many inland waterway transport companies (Scope 3) are small and often insufficiently organised to answer questions such as ‘how much CO2 emissions did shipper X generate during period Y’ correctly and efficiently.
Currently, there is no standardised methodology for measuring a ship’s CO2 emissions. At best, a rough estimate is available: 30 g CO2/tonne-km. However, this does not take into account the type of engine, type of fuel, nautical aspects (water currents, draught, etc.) and operational aspects (speed, waiting areas, loading areas, etc.).
With Clean Shift, we aim to develop a software platform that measures ships’ emissions in real time, reports these to the shipper, and also enables simulations to help reduce emissions.
