At the end of December 2024, educational magazine Klasse launched the Teachers’ Card app. After one month, more than half of Flemish education professionals had already downloaded the app. This proves the importance of the card, says Flemish Education Minister Zuhal Demir: “The Lerarenkaart is a professional card for teaching staff. With it, teachers gain inspiration in museums, theatres, scientific institutions, events ... Through the Teachers’ card, they discover the educational offerings. In this way, they become stronger in their profession, which of course has an effect on the quality of our education.”

On Wednesday, January 29th, Klasse toasted to the 120,000th download of the new Teacher Card app. To mark the occasion, Klasse and partner MAS offered free access to the 'Compassion' exhibition to one hundred teachers.

“Via the Teachers’ card app, Klasse can respond better to the needs of teachers,”says Flemish Minister for Digitisation and Innovation Matthias Diependaele. ‘We bundle the advantages of the Lerarenkaart in a digital and interactive environment. Teachers get tailored benefits in the new application and can share inspiring tips easier and faster.’

But the Teachers' Card also connects teachers ‘live’. Hans Vanderspikken, editor-in-chief of Klasse: “The card is a symbol of appreciation for the teacher, tutor and education support worker. Class invites them to activities such as premieres, behind-the-scenes visits, lectures and formative moments. During Teacher Days, teachers explore, meet each other and build their network with partner organisations. In this way, they lay the foundation for valuable classroom visits with their students.”

Kritiek en klachten 

Terwijl de meeste onderwijsprofessionals zeer tevreden zijn over de app, gaf een beperkt aantal mensen via de supportkanalen van Klasse aan niet in het bezit te zijn van een smartphone waardoor ze hun recht op de Lerarenkaart niet meer kunnen uitoefenen. Zij dienden een klacht in. Klasse registreerde een 80-tal klachten. Een 10-tal leraren dienden klacht in bij de Vlaamse Ombudsdienst en het Vlaams Mensenrechteninstituut (VMRI). Initieel werden deze klachten onontvankelijk verklaard. Enkele leraren trokken ook naar de pers. Er verschenen artikels in alle nationale kranten over het al dan niet discriminerende effect van de beslissing om de Lerarenkaart te digitaliseren zonder in een fysiek alternatief te voorzien.

Bijkomende ontwikkeling voor fysiek alternatief en voor track-en-trace functionaliteit 

In antwoord op de kritiek en klachten, heeft Minister Zuhal Demir beslist dat er een fysiek alternatief moet komen voor de doelgroep van smartphoneloze leraren. Klasse zal deze aanpassing zelf financieren. 

Klasse zal dit fysieke alternatief uitwerken met dezelfde uitvoerder, Who Owns The Zebra, en koppelt hieraan onmiddellijk ook het datacaptatie gedeelte (track en trace). Het onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden en beste pistes in het exploratietraject hebben ondertussen duidelijk gemaakt hoe dat idealiter best gebeurt (met welke functionaliteiten). Verwachte oplevering eind 2025/begin 2026.
