Veb, Addestino and PIO conducted a preliminary study to analyse the functional and technical requirements of the solution, assessed its feasibility with market players and developed a reference architecture. Through a series of workshops, user needs were identified and translated into concrete use cases. These were then assessed by end users in terms of added value, and by various market players in terms of technical feasibility.
The key insights from the preliminary phase are:
- Smart building automation is technically feasible, and the majority of the desired functionalities are covered by existing building management systems (BMS).
- The technical risks are generally low, except when reusing existing installations that lack uniform standards.
- The greatest innovation lies in the integration of existing systems, which requires flexible and open solutions.
- Fully flexible and open solutions do not yet exist. Existing systems do offer partial openness via standards and APIs, but true interoperability is still lacking. No existing solution was identified during the market consultation either.
- The market is stable, with a clear division between:
- Companies specialising in data analysis, modelling and optimisation (software)
- Companies with expertise in the physical integration and control of installations (hardware/integrators)
